Better Existence Sweet Transformation Massage introduces the first Salt Therapy Room open in the public in Fredericksburg; small and about as COVID – safe as you can get, using UV sterilization lights to cleanse after each customer’s visit. Halotherapy or Salt therapy has also been shown to help prevent bacterial and virial infections of the respiratory system, thus we are particularly excited about this offering.  In addition to using UV sterilization for the protection of our clients, we also infuse a combination of Frankincense and Myrrh, combined with a sweet floral like blue tansy (known for its analgesic properties that we can talk about later, and with a history of a metaphysical qualities concerned with rebirth of the spirit – and what a time right now for just that!)

Frankincense and Myrrh, many will recall from the Bible, were most likely chosen with a specific intent of protecting baby Jesus and his family from illness. Research now shows that burning (using real plant based incense that contain the essential oils of the plants) or infusing the essentials oils derived from Frankincense the Myrrh, kills about 65% of airborne pathogens.  Historically these plants have been used to promote wound healing and were considered a form of “gold” in older cultures. Modern scientists are now attempting to understand how these plants can reduce the likelihood of infections caused by such diverse pathogens as strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The link to one such scientific study is provided below and there are several research papers on frankincense and myrrh in this national research database.

Here is another illuminating research article cited https://www.researchgate.net/publication/292140720_Frankincense_-_therapeutic_properties

And quoted below:

Recently, an increasing interest in natural dietary and therapeutic preparations used as dietary supplements has been observed. One of them is frankincense. The traditional medicine of the East is believed to have an anti-inflammatory, expectorant, antiseptic, and even anxiolytic and anti-neurotic effect. This study aims to verify the reported therapeutic properties of frankincense resin and describe its chemical composition based on available scientific studies. The main component of frankincense resin is oil (60%). It contains mono- (13%) and diterpenes (40%) as well as ethyl acetate (21.4%), octyl acetate (13.4%), and methyl anisole (7.6%). The highest biological activity among terpenes is characteristic of 11-keto-ß-acetyl-beta-boswellic acid, acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid, and acetyl-α-boswellic acid. Contemporary studies have shown that frankincense resin indeed has an analgesic, tranquilizing, and anti-bacterial effect. From the point of view of therapeutic properties, extracts from Boswellia serrata and Boswellia carteri are reported to be particularly useful. They reduce inflammatory conditions in the course of rheumatism by inhibiting leukocyte elastase and degrading glycosaminoglycans. Boswellia preparations inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and prevent the release of leukotrienes, thus having an anti-inflammatory effect in ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, bronchitis, and sinusitis. Inhalation and consumption of Boswellia gum resin reduces the risk of asthma. In addition, boswellic acids have an antiproliferative effect on tumors. They inhibit proliferation of tumor cells of the leukemia and glioblastoma subset. They have an anti-tumors effect since they inhibit topoisomerase I and II-alpha and stimulate programmed cell death (apoptosis).

So Frankincense and Myrrh add to the marvelous effects that researchers around the globe are finding come with the use of Halotherapy for both children and adults. In children one of the most interesting studies looked at improvements in children suffering from tinnitus with accompanied hearing loss and found that children’s hearing improved with the salt room used as “play therapy.”

TODAY UNFORNATELY with COVID this scenario could be dangerous but children under strict parental supervision can still bring toys to our small salt room and simply inhale the air as they play. Our technology was developed by a bio-chemist who spent years working at Sloan Kettering with all kinds of ailments and sought to develop a machine not requiring large space or much salt at all, but that was portable and efficient. A bit about this lovely 6o something year old scientist and her heart-felt journey to create the machine now used by B.E.S.T will appear in another blog post. Ann, the inventor is not interested in the marketing of her technology, though she is allowing someone else to do that, she was simply interested in a cost-effective yet highly efficient machine when it comes to clinical outcomes.

Halotherapy has also been shown beneficial for children and adults with asthmatic conditions, and in the prevention asthma in certain high-risk populations.

Research on the benefits of Halotherapy have been done on a variety of populations and for a variety of ailments both in the US and many other countries around the world. The mechanisms are not always completely understood but in the case of cystic fibrosis, one research article stated the following:

https://clinmedjournals.org/articles/ijrpm/ijrpm-2-009.pdf

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a complex genetic disorder characterized by dehydration of the respiratory epithelial surface resulting in impaired mucociliary clearance [1,2]. Thick, sticky secretions obstruct the lower airways and sinuses, providing an environment for chronic infection. A significant proportion of CF patients experience sinus symptoms and almost all have radiographic findings of chronic sinusitis………. (my emphasis added)

While considered a spa treatment, Halotherapy’s effectiveness was evaluated in multiple clinical trials. HT was studied in 139 patients with respiratory diseases, among whom 5 had CF. Improvements in flow volume loop parameters and decreased bronchial resistance measured by plethysmography were reported after 10-20 sessions. The CF patients were reported to have similar response with the treatment. Another recent study showed an increase in lung function and sputum production in 6 CF subjects after only 5 halotherapy sessions

There is just so much research being done on the benefits of Halotherapy – simply breathing the lovely salt air as people were told to be in the last century to control tuberculosis – patients were told to go to the ocean, and those who could afford it, well, they did just that. But not everyone who needed that beautiful health promoting salt air in their lungs and nose could afford it…………..well that is not our philosophy at BEST – those that have been coming to us for a while know that we at B.E.S.T care about making our services affordable to those in need, and asking people with ample resources to buy 1.5 or 2 and not just 1, passing the benefit along to those truly in need, though a scholarship service – AMEN.

Salt therapy is used around the world to treat respiratory, cardiovascular and skin conditions. Hope you will come and check out this new offering. Here’s to your health!
